Authentic Greek salad (Horiatiki Salata)

The Authentic Greek salad, traditionally known as ‘Horiatiki Salata’, meaning village salad, is a refreshing salad served in every Greek tavern and restaurant in Greece and around the world. It consists of simple ingredients like tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, green capsicum, Kalamata olives, feta cheese, olive oil and a sprinkle of dry oregano. The Authentic Greek salad can be served on its own as a light meal, usually in summer or as a side dish to accompany any meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 large tomatoes (ripe)
  • 2 Lebanese cucumbers or 1 long English continental cucumber
  • 1 red onion sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper sliced
  • A handful of Kalamata olives pitted or un-pitted (whole or sliced)
  • 250 g feta cheese cut into cubes
  • ½ cup olive oil extra virgin
  • 1 teaspoon oregano dry or 1 tablespoon fresh, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar (optional)

Instructions

  • Wash and dry the tomatoes. Cut into wedges or large chunks.
  • Peel the cucumber or wash it well and leave unpeeled. Cut long-wise and slice into thick halves.
  • In a large serving bowl, add all the chopped ingredients: the tomatoes, cucumber, capsicum, Kalamata olives, onion and feta.
  • Add the olive oil, red wine vinegar if using, oregano and salt just before serving.
  • Serve with crusty bread or over fried potato chips!

Notes

1. When making the Authentic Greek salad, it is best to use ripe tomatoes. The tomatoes will release some of their juices into the salad, which, together with the olive oil and the smell of the oregano, will take you back to nostalgic memories of the Mediterranean islands!
2. Can add some capers if preferred.
3. The Greek salad can be cut ahead of time and kept in the fridge for a day or two (up to step 3). Continue with Step 4, just before serving.
4. The Greek salad can be served on its own as a light meal in summer or as a side dish. You can also add some shredded chicken or other protein or grain to make it a complete meal.
5. Around the world, many taverns add romaine lettuce and fewer tomatoes to this salad, as it’s more economical, but it’s not the Authentic Greek salad recipe. Nevertheless, if you don’t have enough tomatoes on hand, feel free to bulk up this meal with some romaine lettuces and dress as usual.
